BUILDING 115 ON THE COVER OF PACIFIC NORTHWEST MAGAZINE

Architect and design scholar David Miller calls Building 115 in Seattle's Fremont neighborhood the most adventurous of the 2010 FutureShack competition winners, saying "It gives a nighttime presence on a street that has traffic 24-7. ... It's a great hybrid mix."

Melrose Place
Local food gets a roof in Seattle
Tasting Table Marigold & Mint | Calf & Kid owner Sheri LaVigne | Melrose Market

San Francisco has the Ferry Building, New York has Chelsea Market, Philly has Reading Terminal. Now Seattle is adding to the culinary cred it established through Pike Place with a new destination-worthy food mall: Melrose Market.

At Marigold & Mint, you'll find "organic flowers and edibles" from the owner's family farm, as well as vintage Mason and apothecary jars, while The Calf & Kid offers a small but stunning selection of imported and Pacific Northwest cheeses. Witty tasting notes and a liberal sampling policy add to the appeal.

Rain Shadow Meats, one of Seattle's only regional and sustainable butcher shops, features house-cured meats from butcher Russell Flint, formerly of Boat Street Cafe. Stop in for some of the delicately spiced chicken-liver pâté, or pick up some thinly sliced beef short ribs to throw on the grill; Flint likes to marinate his in chermoula, a fragrant paste used in North African cuisine (click here to download his recipe).

Melrose is also the new home of chef Matthew Dillon's Sitka & Spruce, which relocated in May. The hyper-local menu changes frequently, but a recent visit included rustic delights such as raw scallops with green garlic and preserved lemon ($18) and long-line-caught lingcod with asparagus, honey and Banyuls vinegar ($23).

And the future looks bright: Soon-to-open Melrose tenants include Homegrown Sustainable Sandwich Shop and Bar Ferdinand, a wine shop/bar co-owned by Dillon.

Graham Baba to collaborate on the new PLUM BISTRO in LA

Plum Bistro
12th and Pike, Capitol Hill, Seattle, Washington

So we aren't the hippest cats in Capitol Hill but Jim Graham came back from LA: shades pulled, fancy pants in tact, name dropping like a sailor.

Graham Baba will be teaming up with Makini Howell of Plum Bistro to open a new vegan restaurant in LA.  With Casey Affleck and Joaquin Phoenix as primary backers, it is sure to be a hit with LA's finest animal friendly celebrities.  Although I joke a bit, we are all very excited to be Jim's entourage at the next soiree.

Check out the write up on Makini for more info on the party and restaurant at EcoStiletto:

The first shop at MELROSE MARKET is opening today!

Marigold and Mint, a local organic flower shop owned by Katherine Anderson, is opening its doors today with a “soft” opening in time for Easter!  We’ve had a great time working out the details with builder Tim Pepperell and Michael Northrop of Metalworks & Design.  Come by to get some flowers and support both local business and the new market!

Melrose Market is being developed by Liz Dunn (Dunn & Hobbes) and Scott Shapiro (Eaglerock Ventures), and the building was renovated by MRJ Constructors.  Stay tuned for more openings at the Melrose Market…
